The announcement was made by the FDA commissioner, who said that Prasad had originally joined the agency on a one-year leave of absence from where he previously worked as a professor. He is expected to return to his academic position once his tenure at the FDA concludes.

Leader of the FDA’s Vaccine Division

Prasad currently leads the FDA, the department responsible for regulating vaccines, gene therapies, and other biological medicines. The division plays a key role in reviewing the safety and effectiveness of vaccines and advanced medical treatments before they are approved for public use.

During his time at the agency, Prasad oversaw several major regulatory decisions related to vaccines and biotech therapies while also helping implement new policies within the FDA’s review process.

Controversies During His Tenure

Prasad’s leadership attracted significant debate within the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. Some of the agency’s decisions regarding vaccine reviews, gene therapies, and other experimental treatments drew criticism from drugmakers and patient advocacy groups.

In recent months, industry groups expressed concern about shifting regulatory requirements and calls for additional clinical trials for certain therapies that had previously been expected to move forward in the approval process.

Earlier controversies also surrounded the FDA’s handling of certain vaccine applications and emerging biotech treatments, which intensified scrutiny of the agency’s regulatory approach.

Search for a Successor

With Prasad set to step down at the end of April, federal health officials have begun searching for a new leader to head the biologics division.

The commissioner thanked Prasad for his service and said he had accomplished significant work during his time at the agency, including contributing to new regulatory policies and oversight initiatives.

The leadership transition comes amid broader changes within U.S. health agencies and ongoing discussions about regulatory standards for vaccines, gene therapies, and emerging biotechnology treatments.
