New Delhi,  17th March 2026: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) strengthened its position in the Rajya Sabha following elections held on March 16, 2026, for 11 seats across Bihar, Odisha and Haryana. The results, shaped by cross-voting, opposition absences and procedural disputes, are expected to enhance the ruling alliance’s influence in the Upper House.

The elections were part of a broader process to fill 37 vacancies across 10 states. Outcomes in Bihar and Odisha contributed significantly to the NDA’s tally, while results in Haryana remained under scrutiny due to disputes over vote validity.

Bihar Results Boost NDA Strength

In Bihar, the NDA secured all five contested seats, consolidating its position in the state’s Upper House representation. The outcome was influenced by the alliance’s numerical advantage in the assembly, along with reports of cross-voting and the absence of some opposition legislators during voting.

Political analysts said the results reflected the NDA’s organisational strength and its ability to maintain legislative support within the state. The sweep in Bihar contributed significantly to the alliance’s overall gains in the Rajya Sabha.

BJP Gains in Odisha

In Odisha, candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), along with a BJP-backed Independent, secured key victories. Reports of cross-voting and tensions among party members were noted during the electoral process.

The results indicate an expanding presence of the BJP in a state traditionally dominated by regional parties. Analysts said the outcome could influence future political alignments and electoral strategies in Odisha.

Opposition parties raised concerns over alleged cross-voting, while BJP leaders described the results as a reflection of growing support.

Haryana Outcome Faces Delay

In Haryana, counting was delayed following disputes over the validity of certain votes. Election officials reviewed contested ballots after objections from rival parties, temporarily halting the counting process.

Officials said the review was necessary to ensure compliance with electoral procedures. The closely contested nature of the election in the state has heightened the significance of each vote in determining the final result.

Allegations Raised During Polls

The elections across the three states were accompanied by allegations of inducements and irregularities. Opposition leaders claimed attempts were made to influence voting behaviour, although no official confirmation of such claims has been reported.

Election authorities have not indicated any major violations but are expected to examine complaints submitted by political parties.

Impact on Upper House Balance

The NDA’s gains are expected to strengthen its position in the Rajya Sabha, improving its ability to influence legislative proceedings. While the alliance may not hold an outright majority, the additional seats could reduce its dependence on opposition support for passing key legislation.

Analysts said the results may gradually shift the balance of power in the Upper House as future vacancies are filled.
