Durban, April 17 — Smriti Mandhana became India’s leading run-scorer in T20 Internationals during the first women’s T20I against South Africa at Kingsmead. Mandhana achieved the landmark with a single off Sune Luus, moving past Rohit Sharma to become India’s highest run-getter in T20Is. She had drawn level with Rohit’s tally earlier in the year during India’s tour of Australia before going past it in Durban.

Rohit, who retired from T20 Internationals following India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph, had accumulated 4,231 runs from 159 matches, including five centuries and 32 half-centuries. Mandhana’s progression beyond that mark reflects her sustained consistency at the top of India’s batting order.

Following the match, Mandhana’s aggregate stood at 4,244 runs in 161 T20Is, with an average of 30.53 and a strike rate of 124.45. Her record includes one century and 33 half-centuries, placing her among the most productive batters in the format.

Brief Innings After Early Momentum

Despite reaching the milestone, Mandhana’s stay at the crease was limited. She scored 13 runs off 14 deliveries, including one six, before being dismissed by Ayabonga Khaka. Attempting a drive outside off stump, she failed to keep the ball down, offering a catch to Laura Wolvaardt at cover.

Her dismissal came shortly after the fall of her opening partner, resulting in a shift in momentum during India’s innings. While the start showed promise, Mandhana was unable to convert it into a substantial score.

Controlled Start and Shot Selection

Mandhana began her innings with measured stroke play, opening alongside Shafali Verma. She got off the mark with a controlled drive to long-off and followed it with a flick through midwicket, indicating early composure against the new ball.

As the innings progressed, she expanded her scoring options, picking gaps and rotating strike effectively. A notable moment came when she read the length early against Chloe Tryon and executed a pull shot for six over backward square leg, highlighting her timing.

Her approach combined caution with selective aggression, particularly against deliveries offering width. The early phase of her innings suggested a stable platform for India.

Opening Partnership Sets Platform

Mandhana and Shafali Verma added 46 runs for the opening wicket in just five overs, providing India with a brisk start after being asked to bat first. The partnership maintained a steady scoring rate and kept pressure on the South African bowlers.

Shafali’s aggressive intent complemented Mandhana’s controlled approach, allowing India to build early momentum. However, the partnership ended with Shafali’s dismissal to Tumi Sekhukhune, after which the innings lost some stability.

The early stand remained a key phase in India’s innings, offering a positive start despite the subsequent wickets.

Context and Upcoming Fixture

Mandhana’s record milestone comes as part of an ongoing bilateral series between India and South Africa, with matches scheduled at Kingsmead in Durban. The first T20I marked a significant personal achievement for the India vice-captain despite her limited contribution in the match.

The teams are set to meet again in the second T20I on April 19 at the same venue. Mandhana will look to build on her form and convert starts into larger scores in the upcoming fixture.

Her progression to the top of India’s T20I run charts underlines her role as a key figure in the team’s batting lineup, particularly in the shortest format of the game.
