BIDAR, Karnataka, April 2026 — Karnataka Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader on Sunday underscored the importance of ethical journalism and responsible politics in sustaining democracy, urging media professionals to uphold truth and independence while addressing the 40th State Conference of the Karnataka Working Journalists Association.
Speaking at the valedictory session held at Zira Convention Hall in Bidar, Khader said journalism must go beyond reporting to actively inform, inspire and strengthen democratic values in society.
Journalism and Politics ‘Two Eyes of Society’
Describing journalism and politics as the “two eyes of society,” Khader stressed that both institutions must function independently yet responsibly to ensure transparency and accountability.
“The strength of democracy depends on truthful journalism and ethical governance,” he said, calling on media professionals to maintain balance by highlighting both achievements and shortcomings.
Call for Ethical, Responsible Reporting
Khader urged journalists to prioritise accuracy and fairness, warning against sensationalism and partisan narratives. He said the credibility of the media lies in its ability to present facts objectively while contributing to an informed public discourse.
He also emphasised the need for journalists to engage deeply with social realities, stating that observation, listening and analysis are essential to meaningful reporting.
Concerns Over Decline in Investigative Journalism
State Forest Minister Eshwar B. Khandre highlighted concerns over a perceived decline in investigative journalism, urging media professionals to revive in-depth reporting practices.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring journalist safety while stressing that credible journalism is vital for national development.
Opposition Stresses Media Independence
Leader of Opposition R. Ashok warned against attempts to influence or control the press, stating that a free and fearless media is essential to democracy.
“Journalists must work without pressure. Independence strengthens both the profession and democratic institutions,” he said.
Platform for Dialogue on Media’s Future
The conference brought together political leaders, journalists and public officials to discuss challenges facing the media, including credibility, independence and evolving reporting standards.
