U.T. Khader Stresses Role of Politics, Journalism in Strengthening Democracy
BIDAR, Karnataka, April 2026 — Karnataka Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader on Sunday said strong political institutions and an independent media are essential for sustaining a healthy democracy, urging journalists to uphold truth and balance in public discourse.
Addressing the valedictory session of the 40th State Conference of the Karnataka Working Journalists Association in Bidar, Khader described politics and journalism as “two eyes of society,” highlighting their shared responsibility in maintaining democratic accountability.
‘Truth Central to Journalism’s Credibility’
Khader emphasised that the strength of journalism lies in its commitment to truth, stating that media must inform, inspire, and promote equality within society.
He cautioned against limiting reporting to either criticism or praise, calling instead for balanced and responsible journalism that holds institutions accountable while recognising constructive efforts.
“Journalists must observe society closely, listen carefully, and present facts with clarity and responsibility,” he said.
Leaders Raise Concerns Over Changing Media Landscape
Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre highlighted concerns over the decline of investigative journalism and called for introspection within the profession. He also reiterated the state government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and protection of journalists.
Khandre noted that responsible journalism plays a critical role in shaping public discourse and contributing to national development.
Opposition Emphasises Need for Press Freedom
Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka warned against attempts to control the media, stating that democracy depends on a fearless and independent press.
He urged journalists to perform their duties with courage, adding that the credibility of the profession is strengthened when it operates free from external pressure.
Former legislator Bandeppa Kashempur also called for greater government support for journalists and recognition of the contributions made by earlier generations in building the profession.
